What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
December 15th, 2015 by Carolina Eye Associates
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular, anti-wrinkle treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines, creases, and crow’s feet in men and women. Botox reduces the activity of the muscle that causes lines to form and within days there’s a noticeable improvement which can last for months.
In some cases, BOTOX can solve medical related problems such as involuntary blinking or twitching of the eyelid, a condition known as blepharospasm. The condition is the result of nerve cells sending signals to the muscles. To treat this condition, BOTOX is injected into the affected muscles in the eye to block the nerve signals and relieve muscle spasms and uncontrolled closing of the eyelid.
It is very important to only get BOTOX administered by a physician. As with any medical treatment, there can be side effects. BOTOX affects muscle tissue, and when not administered appropriately, can have serious adverse effects, such as weakening of associated muscles. Ophthalmologists and oculoplastic surgeons (ophthalmologists who also received training in plastic surgery of tissues around the eye) understand the balance of performing cosmetic or reconstructive surgery while maintaining the function of the eyes.
