iStent Brings Relief to Glaucoma Patients

December 22nd, 2015 by Carolina Eye Associates

Carolina Eye Associates provides iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent, a minimally-invasive treatment option to reduce eye pressure for patients with both cataracts and glaucoma.

The iStent is FDA-approved for use in conjunction with cataract surgery to reduce eye pressure in adult patients with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma. In clinical trials, the iStent has been shown to safely reduce eye pressure, which is the primary cause of open-angle glaucoma. It may reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription eye drops.

The iStent is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA and is placed in a patient’s eye during cataract surgery. The device is so small that patients are unable to see or feel it after the procedure is done.

Studies have shown that more than 75% of patients do not comply with their eye medication dosing regimens and nearly 40% discontinue taking their medications before six months. This noncompliance can cause the eye pressure to become out of control, increasing the risk for permanent vision loss. Use of the iStent can decrease risk of large eye pressure fluctuations associated with nonadherence to medication regimens.
